Server Configuration

My server Setup is pretty basic, so in an effort to jazz up this page I’ve opt’d to include the obligatory picture of my server setup. I think it’ll be worth it…
As you can tell, this is not what you would call a world class environment. We’ll start with #1 and move out way down to the dirt.
Item 1 is ‘WDR-Server1′
– Pentium D 3.0Ghz
– 2GB of RAM
– 2 80GB HDs in a RAID1 for the OS
– 2 250GB HDs in a RAID1 for the VMs
– Base OS is Fedora Core 8
You notice the white panel, that is where the 4th hard drive is. The Antec case I’m using only holds three.. so I bought the cheapest hard drive holder I could find that had a fan. I could have paid $10 for black but what the hell!
This server is responsible for hosting my VMs. There are three in total at the moment. This webserver, my Zimbra email server as well as a Windows Server 2003 install that I boot from time to time when I need to do some testing.
Item 2 is the Norco DS-1220. Fantastic machine. You can read about it here at this post. It is holding 6 500GB HDs in a RAID5 with one spare and 4 250GB HDs, also in a RAID5. It is connected to WDR-Server1 via 4 sata cables.
Item 3 is my APC UPS, or Uninterruptible Power Supply. It’s there so that when the power goes out my servers have a chance to power down. In our 100 year old house the power setup leaves much to be desired.
Item 4 is my firewall. We won’t get into details as I may fall asleep but suffice it to say if you find this website offline it’s possible that the 8+ year old hardware has just died.
Item 5 is a nice Apple display that I inherited a few years ago. It’s the only CRT I have left and since I almost never turn it on I expect it to last a good long time.
I am fortunate enough to have had a large block of concrete on the ground to hold all the hardware out of the water. Just out of the frame to the left you will find one of my small off the shelf gigabit switches, hanging by it’s Ethernet cables of course, that forms the backbone of my network.
If you turn your attention to the arrows along the ground, they show the direction of the spring flood water that fills out basement each year. They flow into a small pool where we then pump it outside. In the event that you need to spend some time with the servers this water can provide much need moisture with which to sustain your life, assuming you are too lazy to walk up the stairs…
What can I say? On my salary this is the best I can do. Perhaps one day I will invest in a small boat to protect me against the inevitable rise of the flood waters!

“Item 3 is my APC UPS, or Interruptible Power Supply…”
Interruptible Power Supplies are my favorite. You seem to have forgotten to include the prefix.
Har Har… typo fixed!
