Apple has announced officially that the new version of Apple’s operating system, OS X, will be available on October 26th. If you buy it in a store you can get it at or after 6pm of that day, if you pre-order online it will arrive, via Fedex, on the 26th.
Yes, I have pre-ordered and will be waiting with bated breath for it to arrive. Apple has of course updated their website with loads of new information about the upcoming OS, you can take a peek at the feature overview or the huge list of 300+ New Features.
I’m obviously pretty excited, but new OS versions will do that to a geek. The OS promises a number of pretty great features that will make my life a lot simpler and that always makes me happy.
Something that never gets much press though is when new Server operating systems are released. No one wants to ooh and aah over a server but at the end of the day it’s servers that make life work and boy has Apple stood up and delivered with this release. I won’t be running out and grabbing of copy of server on day one, though unlike Microsoft Apple is able to release both desktop and server at the same time (Zing!), but I will absolutely be getting a copy. The feature list for server has really grown since their last release and I’m very much looking forward to deploying for myself to see how well it performs. The addition of all the podcasting tools alone will make it worth the money but what will keep you coming back is the unbelievable easy of use. No other company even comes close to how easy it is to use the current version of OS X Server and I expect nothing less from this newer version. How they can provide so much power so clearly and simply is beyond me.
I’m sure I’ll post something about my thoughts on OS X Leopard but look for something more in depth in the next 6-9 months about the new OS X Server.
