  • Great rehearsal this evening for an upcoming spring concert. First time seeing a local church's new facility. Looked great! #
  • Following an afternoon and night doing some's as clean as it will be. My family's coming for breakfast. I hope I'm ready! #
  • Now, I'm knackered. Time for Bed! I wonder how long it will take for my friend Josh to turn off device updates from me… #
  • Wow, epic day! Just got a couple old fruit trees cut down and moved out to make room for the new ones. Lawn mowed as well… finally. #
  • Trying to gather myself a bit before I head out to my first meeting of the week. #
  • We had a great meeting tonight and got through a lot. Exciting things to come. Now… I'm fried. Quick dinner and some time to just relax. #
  • Epic day. I was lucky enough to escape with just a bruise on my right shoulder. It could have been much worse… #

  • We've crossed back into Massachusetts. Should be back in Kingston by 11:45. #
  • Wow! Finally home. Epic Weekend. So very tired. #
  • Here are some photos from Friday's concert. It was a great show! #
  • I should start to consider dinner I suppose. No food here at all… and no idea what I feel like eating. #
  • It's been a crazy few days. Time for bed. I'm actually pretty excited to get back to work tomorrow. #
  • Back at my desk. The A/C installation was finished while I was away and is working great. Time to sip some jasmine tea and get down to work. #
  • My butt is still sore from sitting for so long in the car. I may need to spend some time standing at my desk this afternoon… #
  • Wow! It's already past 5 and I'm still at my desk. Time to head to the grocery store and then I'm homeward bound. #
  • Ok… really leaving now… #

Three Shades of Photography

May 18th, 2010

To my mind, I see three ‘goals’ in photography: Documentation, Journalism, and Art. You may have other goals in mind but for me I’m usually shooting with one of those goals in mind.

The art goal is easy to define. Any picture that you have taken simply for the sake of taking it. Maybe you’ve spotted an interesting texture, a unique geometric pattern or just a vibrant flower and taken a picture.

Defining journalism photography, especially in contrast to documentation photography, can be a little more difficult to put into words. I see the types both being about gathering information, be it about a local disaster or celebration. The difference, for me, is that when I’m documenting something I’m doing it for my benefit and when I’m in journalism mode, I’m doing it for others. Allow me to elaborate.

When I’m shooting in the journalistic sense, I’m trying to capture an accurate representation of what is happening. I’m trying to put my opinion of a situation aside and gather all available information around me through the eye of my camera. When I’m shooting to document something I’m simply gathering information that I care about.

  • I'm off to find some pots to hold my fruit trees and vines for a few weeks until I can get them planted. #
  • It's always odd to see a 737 take off over head, followed by a Cessna 172. Glad to see General Aviation is welcome at MHT #
  • I found the elusive battery cap for my D300. I found it in a place I look on whim. I thought "It'll never be in here" and voila! #
  • I dropped off four rolls of film this afternoon. 1 roll of Ektar 100 and 3 of Fuji Superia 400. I have got to step up up my shooting… #
  • Time to head home for a quite dinner and I'm off to rehearsal. I really should pack my suitcase as well.. we leave first thing tomorrow. #
  • Tomato plants have been moved to larger pots. Now for bed! #
  • Time for a quick breakfast and a final suitcase check before I'm out the door! #

  • I have a few hours before my next meeting. I should try to sneak in a nap… #
  • Time to start rolling onto my first meeting of the week. Church went well this AM and after a short nap it's time to take on the world! #
  • Sitting on this months company conference call. Always interesting to listen in on. #
  • Warm and humid today. Not pleasant. I'm really wishing we had AC here at the office… #
  • Turns out the AC vents in my house have no ducts attached. Need to do something abut that pretty quick lest I have only cold floors… #
  • I love running my end of day backup. It's great to see all the files you worked on stream past. #
  • Thanks @MonsantoCo. With these new weeds, you can make more money right? Worst Company ever. #
  • Quite a warm day happening. Servers are already screaming. Hopefully we'll get some news on the status of our AC today… #

  • It's been quite a day. Cookies came out well. Should hold me over a few more weeks. Time for a quick shower.. and sleep. #
  • Wow. I got an email 'From Twitter' this AM. Looked very good, was about 'delayed' messages. It's a scam though. Don't click it!! #
  • Heading down to RI for a church service. Going to check out how they do things. Only a short 3 hr ride away… #
  • Finally home. What a night! I'm desperate for some sleep… #
  • Time to source some lunch. Interesting day today. Much less stress than last week. :: exhale :: #
  • Clouds are rolling in… going to try for some tennis anyway. Rain is expected… #
  • Just had the light that was hanging from my ceiling re-attached. Hopefully it stays up this time… #
  • Time to head out into the overcast and dig up some dinner before Praise Team rehearsal tonight. Should be our first full rehearsal in months #
