Cingular Treo 750 as a Modem

Ok, using my Macbook and my Treo 750 it was pretty simple to get online. I’ll outline my process here for anyone else who might be curious to try. I will also post about getting it to work with my HP nc6400, assuming I’m able to make it happen…

Step 1:

Install the Treo Cingular modem scripts. All you need to do is download this file and copy the contained files into the /Library/Modem Scripts folder starting from the root of your system drive. You will not find this folder in your users Library folder.

Step 2:

Pair your mac and your phone. Enable Bluetooth on both your mac and your treo 750, and set your Treo to be discoverable. When you are in the bluetooth panel enableing bluetooth the option to make discoverable is just beneath it.

I have my mac setup to show bluetooth preferences in the menubar, and I’d reccomend you do that as well. It makes this much simpler going forward and make for reconnecting to the internet over bluetooth that much easier. You’ll find it as an option in your system preferances.

From the Bluetooth icon in my menu bar I have the option to ‘Set Up Bluetooth Device’. It has a simple wizard to follow and pair the devices. Couple of ‘Continues’ and a couple password entries later and the devices are paired. One thing to be sure you select during the setup is ‘Access the internet with your phones data connection‘. Once you click continue it will ask you for some information about how to use the phone to connect to the internet: (This stuff isn’t going to work but I fill it in anyway…)

Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1

Modem Scripts: (Look for ‘Windows Mobile GSM’, you added this in earlier with the download)

From here I also select to show modem status in the menu bar, it’s a very easy way to get to the dialer when you are ready to connect.

From this point it seems like things should work.. they do not…. but we are close. We need to input some options to the modem to make it work, to do this we have to create a new connection.

Step 3:

Create a new Bluetooth Modem. What you need to do is go back to System Preferences and select ‘Network’ once in there from the ‘Show’ pull down select ‘Network Port Configurations’ then select New.

I call my connection Treo Connect, name it whatever you want, as long as it doesn’t start with Cingular, it will confuse you later. Next from the show pull down select your new connection and fill in the info:

Service Provider: Treo Connect (Not Required)
Account Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Telephone Number: *99#

Under PPP Options: Uncheck ‘Use TCP header Compression’

From the ‘Bluetooth Modem tab:

Select Windows Mobile GSM from the Modem Pull down and uncheck ‘enable error correction and data compression in modem’ as well as ‘Wait for dial tone before dialing’.

Click Apply Now and close System Preferences and Internet Connect.

Step 4:

Enable ‘Modem Link’ This one is a little weird if you ask me. On my Treo there is an app called ‘Modem Link’, it’s simply listed in the program section of the Treo, that seems to actually enable the device to act as a modem. You just have to open the app and tell it the type of connection you are going to use to transfer the modem data and then select activate, strange this is Bluetooth is not listed. It shows USB and IrCOMM. I select USB, and then select Activate. It works for me… does the device see Bluetooth as some kind of USB device? I don’t know…

Step 5:

The moment of truth:

From the modem pull down in the menu bar Select your new connection, not the Cingular one but the other one 🙂 I called it ‘Treo Connect’. Then, from the modem pull down click ‘Connect’ and in about 30 seconds you will be connected to the net!

Download Speed: About 150Kbps (~18KBps)
Upload Speed: About 30Kbps (~3.5KBps)

It’s not fast.. but it works!
