Why I choose to not use Dell

June 18th, 2007

It seems that I have in the past spoken about how I’m not a fan of Dell computers. I used to be, who doesn’t like a cheap PC? I encouraged my mom to buy one, as well as my sister and both of those machines are running great. I used to have plenty of love for Dell and I used to tell people to buy them all the time but lately in the absence of Michael Dell (who has recently been brought back into the company) Dell made some choices and cut some corners I just cannot stand behind. Case in point: My moms dell, the last one I have recommended someone buy, came out of the box with spyware installed on the system. I practically fell of the chair when I saw that.

Vacation – Thinking ahead, and thinking back

June 15th, 2007

Well, I have a much needed vacation coming up towards the end of summer and I am already thinking about all of the items I want to make sure I have. It was last years vacation that got me inspired to starting taking more photos and this year I want to make sure I have plenty of toys to dabble with.

I of course have my Nikon D40 with it’s 18-50mm kit lens, and my 70-300mm VR lens but I have also added a few more items. The first is a wireless remote to be able to take pictures with out touching the camera. Sure, this may sound lazy but it’s also going to make getting certain types of shots much simpler. For instance, what if, for some reason, I want to be in the shot? Also, when you want to do a long exposer it’s best to mount the camera on something and not touch it. Even pressing the shutter release will move the camera some amount and when you are zoomed into something a millimeter at the camera is inches on the shot. Once I get the camera setup I can do 30 second or longer low light shots and sun rise/sunset shots that I have never been able to get the way I’d like. Assuming I can get up early enough in the AM I may be able to get some killer sun rise shots looking out across the ocean.

New Year… so new and fresh

December 31st, 2006

What is the point of a New Year celebration? Is it really that big of a deal to change the calendar on the wall? I mean iCal and Outlook don’t pop up on January first and scream about the change from one year to the next. New Years is simply a time for people to get drunk and nothing more. Sure lots of people make ‘resolutions’ but what is the point of that? If you have something that you should be doing to better yourself do you really have to wait for the 1st of the year to do it? Let’s me honest, it’s just convenient. No one wants to start a new diet in November so they put it off until the temptation to over eat or to indulge in great holiday food has passed. Once the immediate reason to goto party after party is gone people decide to stop drinking or smoking. Using the first of the year is just a way to pat yourself on the back, a way for you to announce to the world that you are going to be better this year then last. This is a very profitable time of year for all of the gyms, people are signing up to go work out and some very very small percentage actually do. It’s pure profit, money is just raining down but two months from now gym attendance will be back down to its usual level and they get to keep the money. If you want to go out and party then do it, if you want to loose weight then do it but you needn’t wait for the yearly changing of the calendars to start that promise. Just do it, the best time to start bettering yourself is now.

New db400971999 Blog

December 27th, 2006

I used to be a Drupal user but I have switched (back) to db400971999. Sometimes the easy way is the best way. I had been looking for a good way to integrate my image gallery into my blog and db400971999 seems to have the best plugin. It’s called WPG2 and it integrates db400971999 with an existing Gallery2 Image Gallery. Ideal for me.

I have had some luck getting it to work but at this point it’s not 100%. I have the integration far enough along that the right side navagatio bar shows an image from my gallery but when you click on it the interface it brings up doesn’t work correctly. You can click on the things that come up by they never actually take you to an album. The text right about that image is also a link though, it’s a direct link to the home-page of my image gallery which works just fine. With any luck I’ll get that sorted out shortly.
